DENR holds video contest in celebration of World Water Day

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), is calling for submissions of one-minute videos to celebrate the World Water Day (WWD) on March 4, with the theme “Water and Jobs.”

The “Water and Jobs 60-Second Video Contest” is designed to raise awareness on the importance of water to human life with focus on the connection between water and the decent work agenda in moving towards sustainable development, according to DENR Assistant Secretary and concurrent EMB Director Juan Miguel Cuna.

“We aim to highlight this year’s theme and give recognition to water sustainability heroes or the men and women in our communities whose work centers on various sustainable water strategies,” Cuna said.

Cuna noted that countries around the world are adopting these sustainable water strategies like water reuse, watershed restoration, estero or water body rehabilitation, water conservation and efficiency, and many other best practices to address global water challenges.

The video contest is open to all college students within Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

All video entries must be posted on the Facebook page of the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools (NSSES) by March 4. Entries will be judged based on relevance to the theme, style and creativity and composition and originality.

Top winners will receive cash prizes of P20,000, P15,000 and P10,000. Three entries will also get a consolation prize of P5,000. Awarding ceremonies will be held on March 22 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City, during the culminating activity of the WWD celebration.

Full contest mechanics can also be found on the EMB website (www.emb.gov.ph). Interested participants may contact the EMB’s Environmental Education and Information Division at telefax no. 928-46-74 or telephone no. 376-56-10   for inquiries.

To mark WWD 2016, the DENR, its attached agencies and partners have prepared a week-long program from March 17-22.

WWD was first celebrated in 1993 when the United Nations declared March 22 of every year as World Day for Water. In the Philippines, the celebration lasts for at least one week by virtue of Executive Order No. 258 issued in 1996, adopting the Philippine Water Week.
