The Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), one of the attached agency of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) held its 115th Foundation Anniversary with its Guest of Honor, the newly appointed Secretary of DOST, Sec. Fortunato de la Pena, and the Mayor of Taguig City, Hon. Lanie Cayetano, and with the presence of Coun. Jojo Iron, on Thursday, July 1, 2016 at the Advanced Device and Materials Testing Laboratory (ADMEL), DOST Compound, Bicutan, Taguig City.

The DOST acknowledged the presence of two high ranking officials of South Korea in the persons of : HAI-DOO KIM, PhD, President-Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS-ASEAN) and BYUNG-SUM KIM, PhD, Director, KIMS.

Likewise, present during the event were the following; PATRICIA V. AZANZA, PhD, Director,ITDI; BESSIE A. BASILLA, PhD., Chief, MSD, ITDI; MARISSA A. PAGCALICAWAN, PhD., Project Leader, ITDI, KIMS Project; Engr. REYNALDO L. ESGUERRA, OIC, Deputy Director for R& D, ITDI; Engr. RAMON M. BRANZUELA, Chief Planning Division, Phil. Fiber Industry Development Authority (PHILFIDA), MR. JEFFREY SAMONTE,GNOSTEK, Inc. and Engr. REYNALDO C. ESGUERRA, OIC, Deputy for R&D, ITDI.

The theme for this year’s celebration of its 115th Foundation Anniversary is simply “NOON, NGAYON, BUKAS”.

Dr. Ma. Patricia V. Azanza, ITDI Director, in her welcome remarks, was very much elated to speak in behalf of the ITDI that through the years they have gone a milestone in achieving the highest performance of innovations in the field of Science and Technology. Their The Institution have grown  globally competitive by providing Research and Development and the Technical Services that they have extended to the MICRO, SMALL and MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (MSMEs) scales both in government and private sectors.

The ITDI and their employees, scientists and the technical experts have used their resources and the state –of-the-art facilities in order to develop, strengthen, and sustain business services in our country.

The facilities that they have recently developed were the following: BIOLOGICAL TESTING LABORATORIES, METROLOGY IN CHEMISTRY, NANO TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY, PACKAGING LABORATORY, ADMATEL OR ADVANCED DEVICE AND MATERIALS TESTING LABORATORY, NATIONAL METROLOGY LABORATORY ( accredited by the Federal Republic of Germany, DEUTSCHE AKKREDITIERUNGSSTELLE(DAKKS) and DOST-ITDI FOOD PROCESSING MACHINES.

At this point, DOST-ITDI announce that the following technologies are now ready for transfer, to wit:

1. ITDI Monascus purpureus whole cell laboratory scale color production technology .

2. FREEZE-dried avocado using DOST- developed freeze dryer.

3. Powdered egg albumin using the DOST developed spray dryer

4. Carrot chips using DOST-developed vacuum fryer

5. Chill oil using DOST-developed water retort

6. Emergency Food Reserve (EFR)

Meanwhile, to coincide with its celebration is the LAUNCHING of “TRYK NI JUAN”.

The DOST-ITDI have developed a tricycle first of its kind in our country. This project is a collaborative research works between ITDI and Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS). They have developed this in order to respond the call of a greener environment and the negative impact of climate change. The materials used for this TRYK comes from the abaca fiber , one of our local and abundant plants in our country.

Through further research and careful studies of ITDI and KIMS, both jointly agreed to use abaca fiber with the combination of resin as a composite materials for roofing and the sidecar of the tricycle .

During the Press Conference one of the questions asked by media was regarding the durability of the unit during tricycle crash. The panelist replied that the materials used to fabricate the roof and the sidecar of the tricycle was made of abaca fiber combined with resins, he gave his assurance that even if this is the first time in our country this is durable and safe because everything had passed the requirements and meet the standards in compliance for fabrication.

For the record, there are 15 units to be fabricated and later on to be deployed for actual road tests and break-ins. (Click picture below to enlarge)
