QUEZON CITY JOINS CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IN EARTH HOUR

Quezon City called on its residents to participate in the annual Earth Hour celebration on Saturday, 25 March 2017. Earth Hour, a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

This year’s celebration will have for its theme: “Shine a Light on Climate Action.”

The switch off symbolizes the participants’ commitment to raise awareness on climate change and other environmental issues.

Over 7,000 cities and towns worldwide participate in the annual event. For several years, Quezon City has taken the lead in the nation’s participation in the Earth Hour.

Frederika C. Rentoy, head of the Quezon City Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department, said the city government will be documenting the switch-off in malls, barangays and other city government-owned facilities.

“The photo documentation will be sent to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) for them to highlight the city’s participation. Should you have similar activities in your communities, kindly advise the QC EPWMD so that the same may be included in the documentation,” she said in a memo circulated at City Hall.
