The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL), Scientific Career System (SCS) in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) hosted the SCS Orientation and Research Colloquium to encourage Davao researchers to become Career Scientists.
SCS is a system of recruitment, career progression, recognition, and reward of scientists in the public service, as a means of developing a pool of highly qualified and productive scientific personnel.
In his opening message, the DOST XI Regional Director Dr. Anthony Sales highlighted how the SCS can facilitate progression and career advancement and its importance in nation-building.
“I sincerely hope that we will have a good number of Davao-based scientific personnel in the government service and non-faculty or full-time research personnel from State Universities and Colleges,” he added.
Academician Mudjekeewis D. Santos, a Career Scientist IV at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, said that there are only 67 active Career Scientists for over 110 million Filipinos in the country which is a very alarming number.
He also presented the process of application, qualifications, and benefits of becoming a qualified Career Scientist.
“Please join us, our country needs you,” he added.
The event also covered the topics on Predatory Journals and Conferences discussed by Dr. Elmer G. Bautista, Research Ethics delivered by Dr. Maribel L. Dionisio Sese, and the Magna Carta Benefits of Career Scientists discussed by Atty. Shiela O. Valino.
Various Career Scientists also discussed their research projects and encouraged the participants to explore their research interests by being a Career Scientist.
NAST PHL Director Luningning Samarita Domingo said that the SCS recognizes the indispensable role researchers play and expressed commitment that the SCS will provide an enabling environment that fosters excellence and provides fair compensation.
“To all our researchers, we extend a warm invitation to embrace the path of SCS and actively contribute to the advancement of Science and Technology in our country. We eagerly anticipate your joining the system,” she concluded.
The SCS has been established within the civil service pursuant to Executive Order No. 784 dated March 17, 1982, in order to support and encourage the development of Science and Technology which is one of the main pillars in the country’s national development efforts.
