Quezon City is gearing up for its grandest celebration yet in honor of the Chinese New Year, set to take place from February 9th to 11th. Mayor Joy Belmonte, leading the initiative, announced that February 9th has been declared a “Special Non-working Day” by Malacañang, allowing residents and visitors alike to fully participate in the festivities.
Mayor Belmonte highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing the city’s commitment to showcasing the rich Filipino-Chinese heritage, particularly in the renowned Banawe area. Banawe Street and its surroundings have been officially declared as Quezon City’s very own Chinatown district through City Ordinance No. 2453-2015, covering an expansive area of 5,919 square kilometers.
Ma. Cristina Tetta A. Tirona, Officer-in-Charge of the Quezon City Tourism Department, revealed that the Chinese New Year celebration marks the commencement of the city’s 85th Founding Anniversary festivities, which will extend throughout the year. The celebration kicks off with a three-day extravaganza featuring cultural tours, food fairs, and performances.
On February 9th, the festivities will commence with a Chinatown heritage tour and a food fair boasting 33 vendors. The program will continue on February 10th with cultural performances and culminate with a Chinatown bike tour and a spectacular fireworks display.
Representative Arjo Atayde expressed strong support for the Chinese community’s contributions to the city’s economy and livelihoods. Joaquin Co, President of the Quezon City Association of Filipino-Chinese Businessmen, Inc. (QCAFBI), echoed this sentiment, anticipating the event to be the largest in history.
Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan of the Quezon City Police District assured the public of stringent security measures, with 250 personnel deployed to maintain peace and order throughout the celebration. He confirmed that there have been no security threats detected thus far.
The event promises to attract around 100,000 tourists, both local and foreign, and embodies Quezon City’s vibrant multicultural spirit.
