The 2024 Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards recognized a record-breaking 2,504 outstanding young Filipino innovators, many from regional areas. For years, discussions on science and technology in the Philippines have centered on Metro Manila and major urban centers, often overlooking talent from other regions.
The Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) marked this achievement by hosting three regional awarding ceremonies in Tacloban, Benguet, and Cagayan de Oro—a move that highlights the growing competitiveness of STEM achievers outside urbanized regions.
While the National Capital Region (NCR) still led with 922 awardees, other regions showed remarkable performances, emphasizing that scientific excellence is no longer centralized in Metro Manila.
CALABARZON (297), Central Luzon (174), Bicol (158), and Central Visayas (158) produced a significant number of awardees, reflecting the increasing strength of STEM education nationwide.
Further, regions such as Northern Mindanao (92), Davao (87), and MIMAROPA (71) have emerged as growing centers of STEM development, proving that talent and innovation are thriving in various parts of the country.
At the Northern Mindanao award ceremony, DOST-SEI Director Jayeel S. Cornelio reminded the young recipients of their responsibilities beyond academic achievement.
“Intelligence is useless if not used beyond one’s gain and self-recognition. Instead, intelligence is more meaningful if used to make a difference,” Cornelio said.
As DOST-SEI expands its reach, young innovators from various regions are making significant strides in science and technology, showcasing the growing prominence of STEM talent across the country. Their achievements contribute to local scientific breakthroughs and highlight the potential of every region to drive national progress.
Through its initiatives, DOST-SEI is fostering a more inclusive and innovative society, opening new pathways for scientific advancement and community empowerment. This momentum is inspiring more individuals to pursue excellence, creating a ripple effect that supports a sustainable, technology-driven economy. (Angela Kim Perez, LCUP-ABCOMM2)
