The Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office recently awarded the winners of “Advances in Pinoy Agri-biotechnology: An Infographics Poster Contest” at the closing ceremonies of the 10th National Biotechnology Week.

DA-BPO Director Antonio Alfonso praised the winners during the program held at the Commission on Higher Education Auditorium in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

“Magaganda ang mga entries, professionally done though amateur ang category,” he said.

For the applied biotech category, third place went to Dr. Karen Barroga’s “3-in-1 Golden Rice”, which was also awarded “most liked” based on the viewers’ votes while Dr. Mary Beth Maningas’  “LAMP primers for White Spot Syndrome Virus” ranked second.

Dr. Claro Mingala’s entry titled “Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus detection by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay” won the top prize for the category.

For the basic category, third place went to Xavier Caguiat’s  “Nucleotide Sequence Analysis of Rice Tungro Viruses in the Philippines” while Dr. Virgie Alcantara’s  “Local Bacterial Isolates as Source of Phospholipases  for Food Applications placed second.

Dr. Apolinario Yambot and Simon Alcantara’s “DNA Barcoding of High Value Aquatic Species in the Philippines” won first place and was also the “most liked.”
