DOST Showcases Odor-free Packaging of Frozen Durian in Davao Agri-Trade Expo The Department of Science and Technology Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) showcased its packaging technology for durian, which keeps the flavor and aroma inside the package, during the Davao Agri-Trade Expo last September 30, 2022, held at the SMX Convention Center, Davao City.

The transportation of durian fruit used to be limited due to its overpowering aroma that easily spreads within an area. With the multi-layer high-barrier packaging technology developed by DOST-ITDI, this is no longer a problem.

According to DOST-ITDI, the packaging of the durian fruit uses multiple packaging, including a high barrier film wrapper, vacuum packaging with a laminated pouch, and airtight glass jars. This process keeps the strong aroma and flavor of durian flesh for at least 12 months.

DOST-ITDI said that the packaging technology minimizes the rate at which water vapor, oil, oxygen, aroma, and vapor are released or suppressed, which affects the food product’s shelf life.

The packaging technology was showcased at the Davao Agri-Trade Expo to heighten interest among the industry and manufacturing sectors and encourage them to explore the DOST ITDI-developed technologies.

The Davao Agri-Trade Expo is the biggest and longest running trade expo in Mindanao, hosted by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. The event provides a platform to showcase sustainable and innovative agricultural practices to strengthen agripreneurship in Mindanao. (DOST XI S&T Information and Promotion)
