ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – Scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and academic leaders gathered at the DOST Zonal Conference at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) on March 14, 2025. This was the fourth leg in a series of five nationwide conferences aimed at strengthening science and technology in the country. The event focused on three key DOST programs: Program PROPEL, STI4SDG (Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals), and Pagtanaw 2050, all designed to speed up technology transfer and commercialization. Following previous conferences in Baguio, Batangas, and Cebu, this was the first session in Mindanao, with another scheduled in April 2025.
DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. highlighted the importance of science and technology in addressing major national issues like poverty, food security, clean energy, and climate change. He explained how the Pagtanaw 2050 program helps leaders and policymakers plan for the future using science and technology.
Dr. Solidum also introduced Program PROPEL, a new initiative that not only funds research but also helps bring innovations to the market. “DOST is more than just a funder of R&D. We are a partner in turning ideas into real-world solutions by understanding industry needs, fostering collaboration, and strengthening the science and technology ecosystem,” he said.
Among the key officials present were Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo, Jr., DOST Assistant Secretary for Technology Transfer, Communications, and Commercialization, Dr. Romela N. Ratilla, Regional Director of DOST X, and Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, Chancellor of MSU-IIT.
Dr. Juanillo discussed Program PROPEL’s support system for innovators, which includes technology assessment, business development, mentorship, technology validation, intellectual property (IP) management, legal guidance, and access to investors.
The conference also featured discussions on semiconductors, electric vehicles (EVs), integrated circuits, and artificial intelligence (AI). Experts Mr. Glenn Quiro from the Apl.de.ap Foundation and Dr. John Anthony Jose from De La Salle University shared insights on industry trends, challenges, and opportunities for commercializing research.
With over 150 participants from Regions IX and X, the event demonstrated the growing momentum in the country’s science and technology sector. It also underscored Mindanao’s potential as a key player in innovation and economic development.
