By irradiating a seaweed called carrageenan, experts found that the resulting product  becomes an effective plant growth enhancer (collected in the blue plastic containers) that can be mixed with commercial fertilizers. Field tests have shown that using irradiated carrageenan can increase rice yield up to 65 percent. The process is done at the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility of the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Nuclear Research Institute. (Rodolfo P. de Guzman, S&T Media Service)
