In his Speech during the Earth Day celebration held on April 22, 2016, Mr. Isagani Serrano, President and Country Coordinator, Earth Day Network Philippines, recalled as regards to the discovery of French Mathematicians Fourier long time ago.

According to Mr. Serrano, Fourier had discovered an atmospheric planetary mirror that let sunlight can easily but traps it when radiating back to outerspace. This trick mirror is now called as “greenhouse effect” and what we also called the “global warming”.

As we all know, we are suffering day to day from too much heat because of the planetary warming is rising from 1 or 2 degrees which is no longer tolerable. Much to our regrets, we been now cringing and craving for a cold temperature.

The Earth Day Movement was founded in April 22, 1970, 46 years ago. This movement is a commitment to build a better world, where there is no poverty and hunger in all mankind. That the world must be free from harm and danger caused by catastrophe, natural and man-made disaster.

In December 2015, the UN community has signed up to an Agreement in Paris in order to ensure that global warming can be prevented and the most important thing is to save the earth from climate change catastrophe.

Indeed, the Philippines has signed up different Agreements and committed itself with the following: ADDIS ABABA ACTION AGENDA from the 3RD UN CONFERENCE ON FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT (FFD3) IN ADDIS ABABA, THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (ADGS) FROM THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT IN NEW YORK, THE SANAI FRAMEWORK FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION FROM THE WORLD CONFERENCE ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IN SENDAI, JAPAN, AND THE PARIS AGREEMENT FROM 21St CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES TO THE UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE OR NFCCC COP21 IN PARIS.

Mr. Serrano expressed his fear that despite the numerous Commitments or Agreements that our country had participated in,  if our national leaders would be reluctant to support the endeavors of these organizations, then at the end our country would suffer the consequence and the total effect of catastrophe that we must have to prevent from it.

Therefore, he challenged our candidates to take this issues and matters into consideration at to put these as the top priority in their platforms of government during elections because millions of Filipino lives are at stake and most especially the future of our next generation. (Adela G. Ida)
