Message of Executive Director JAIME C. MONTOYA, MD, MSc, PhD, CESO III, Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development(DOST-PCHRD). during the Science Media Tour at Orthopaedic International, Inc. (OII).

Good morning everyone! When it comes to healthcare service delivery, everybody is now asking for improved results, better access, convenience, faster diagnosis and treatment.

If we continue what we’ve always done, we will get the results we have always gotten but the pressing health concerns we face today demands more and requires innovative solutions.

The Axis Knee System being the first and only total knee replacement system to be developed and manufactured in the Philippines. The ASEAN region is one great example and it is one step in the right direction of fostering home-grown innovations.

Over the course of two and a half years of hard work, coming to fruition last year when it was launched, I am pleased that we now have a painless, straight, and well-aligned knee joint with near-normal range of motion knee implant that can lasts up to 20 years.  It is my pleasure to have worked with the men and women behind this undertaking with OII, led by Dr. Ramon Gustilo.

The Council’s partnership with OII is the first and only public-private partnership (PPP) of the Philippine Government in the field of biomedical research. The importance of private sector investment in research cannot be overemphasized. With this mode of partnership, technology uptake by industry is faster and I hope that this will jumpstart more partnerships of this kind. With this, I am grateful that OII is one of our ally in realizing the Council’s vision of a healthy Filipino nation that benefits from research-based solutions and innovations.

I hope that our friends in media will be able to help us promote the Axis Knee System and other PCHRD supported technologies. Thank you for your continuous support. Magandang umaga!
